Return of the Serif

In the past, we’ve been told not to use serif fonts due to its readability on low resolution monitors and poor rendering in WindowsXP. Now, with display technology advancing and IE7+ supporting ClearType by default, I think it is about time to change that rule. Take a look at the example sites that I’ve collected, you will probably agree with me that serif typeface will be the next web font trend.

American Airlines Web Site: The Product of a Self-Defeating Design Process
Designer Dustin Curtis was so disgusted with the American Airlines Web site that he redesigned it, and posted the results as an open letter to the company. Guess what? One of AA's designers responded with a long defense about why better design dies a slow death at places like AA.Full article here

960 Grid System
This has been around for a while and is what I use for everything.
Even if you already have a favourite grid, the site is worth a look to see a good showcase of grid based design.
If you download the kit you get templates for Fireworks, Inkscape, Illustrator, OmniGraffle, Photoshop & Visio, as well as Printable sketch paper.
More info here.
The 12 column grid is divided into portions that are 60 pixels wide. The 16 column grid consists of 40 pixel increments. Each column has 10 pixels of margin on the left and right, which create 20 pixel wide gutters between columns.

Essence
The 960 Grid System is an effort to streamline web development workflow by providing commonly used dimensions, based on a width of 960 pixels. Banner Design Comp
The blog needs a banner. Whip one up at 730px wide and I'll post it up. I've made one to get us started.
We should turn the banner over as often as possible imho. Email them to me and I'll put them up.
Don't worry about creating any finely tuned pieces of art, they should be quick, dirty and loud!
If anyone is super-keen to take an active role, let me know and I'll make you a site admin.
